Mixed Martial Arts Aficionado Dies Following Training Session

Salvador Flamenco loved mixed martial arts. So much so, that he routinely flew around the country to spar with other enthusiasts he met online.

But something went horribly wrong after a two-day training session at a home in Vancouver, Wash., on Dec. 17, leaving Flamenco dead at 38.

“He was mostly doing a mix of wrestling and boxing on this trip,” said Flamenco’s roommate and friend Robert Longhini. “But there was no indication of any injuries. No physical blemishes that would have shown any sort of trauma.”

After day two, Flamenco complained of dizziness. He vomited, called 911 and died less than an hour after being rushed to an area hospital.

An autopsy revealed that Flamenco died of blunt force injuries and his death was ruled a homicide. But charges are unlikely as investigators say the death appeared to be a tragic accident.

Born in California, Flamenco spent the last decade in Chicago. Working as a United Airlines flight attendant and a doorman at the Hancock Building’s residential unit, he took several mixed martial arts training trips a year -- meeting fellow enthusiasts on the All Fighters website.

“People are thinking, he found someone to fight with online. That’s so scandalous,” Longhini said. “But it’s not like that. He would talk about this small community of fighters and wrestlers who would say, ‘You’ve got to train with this guy with these skills.’”

The Bucktown resident wasn’t a novice. He’d practiced the sport since high school. He despised the term “fighter” in reference to mixed martial arts.

“Him dying like this is a horrible thing but I just know that he loved what he was doing,” Longhini said. “I don’t think he would have any regrets. He would make all the same choices again.”
